While your child’s adorably decorated nursery sufficed during the first year, the bedroom needs an upgrade to suit their developing personality. Find a Safe Location for the Bed
Creating a vision for the room and figuring out how to arrange it can be difficult for some parents. One tip is to position the bed in a safe location.
Keep the bed away from the window in case of a break-in or a storm. Avoid situating the bed underneath hanging décor like picture frames and shelves. The items could fall and injure your child as they sleep.
Refrain From Heavy Décor Pieces on the Walls
Heavy wall décor paired with a rowdy toddler is an injury waiting to happen. A simple bump into the wall could cause the item to fall onto your baby!
A helpful alternative is to use lightweight art canvases, posters, and other thin items that won’t pose a threat. If you don’t prefer to hang anything, wall decals are an efficient way to fill the space.
You can even hang items on wood doors without using nails! Add a lightweight wreath, a sign of your toddler’s favorite superhero, or a hook for storage. Keep the items high on the door for parental access to ensure your child is safe from these items. It’s a great tactic to prevent injury while keeping décor throughout the room.
Add Rugs for Extra Comfort
Many homes use hardwood or engineered hardwood throughout the house, including the bedrooms. But this feature might not be favorable for your stumbling toddler. If they were to fall, the tough floor could hurt them.
Plush rugs are a helpful solution. Place a large rug to take up most of the room. Then, add little accent rugs of your child’s favorite things. Some examples are a rug shaped like a butterfly, a dinosaur, a tiara, or a truck.
Place Childproof Latches on All Drawers
Toddlers are on their way to walking, but it’s still a learning process. They’re likely to grab onto whatever items are at their level, including furniture drawers.
In their bedroom, be sure to install childproof latches on the dresser and nightstand drawers. The drawer won’t slide out if they grab onto the handle to stand or find balance.
There’s also no need to worry about a tacky appearance. There are securable latches for the inside of the drawers!
Store Toys in Soft Bins
Tough plastic containers and boxes with hinges are more likely to injure your child. A cube storage unit is great for decorating a toddler’s room with safety in mind. The minimal height is accessible for small children, while the bins are soft and lightweight.
