082: Ashi Jelinek — Hey Kids, Go Drink Your Vitamins! 1920 1080 Chase Jennings

Wouldn’t it be cool if kids could drink their vitamins and enjoy them? Well, they can. You may have seen this founder’s products on the shelves at Walmart, CVS, or on Amazon or Thrive Market — Kids Luv. They are changing the game for kids’ drink boxes everywhere!

Ashi Jelinek is a Los Angeles-based mother of three who found the market lacked innovative, health conscious children’s products. Before becoming a stay-at-home parent, Ashi started her career in theatre in New York and attained her undergraduate degree in theater/communications at California Institute of the Arts. In launching The Luving Company in 2018, Ashi brings her personal experiences as a mother along with her passion for health and wellness. Focusing on promoting a healthy lifestyle to her kids, Ashi set out to create a new brand for both her own and other families alike. Ashi developed KidsLuv in 2018 upon realizing all kids’ drinks were laden with sugar and little health benefits, and combined with pediatric dentists’ recommendation to avoid gummy vitamins, KidsLuv was born. She intentionally developed the product to meet almost any need: it’s Certified Non-GMO, Vegan, Kosher, Gluten-free, and packaged in an 8 oz. recyclable, resealable, straw-free drink carton.

081: Emily Groden — Who Wants Waffles? 1920 1080 Chase Jennings

As many of us are homeschooling our kids or managing their hybrid school schedules along with our own work day, we’re all scrambling in the mornings. Breakfast is undoubtedly the most important meal of the day as our kiddos are breaking their fast of 12 hours of sleep beforehand. So we want to give them foods that are satiating and nourishing.

Today, we’re talking to a female and mom founder, Emily Groden, who’s helping make breakfast a little easier and a lot healthier. Her company is called Evergreen and they specialize in waffles.

Evergreen, features miniature waffles made with 100% whole wheat, no refined sugar or dairy, and flavored only with fruits, vegetables, nuts or spices. Varieties include banana peanut butter, mixed berry almond, matcha chocolate chip, zucchini and carrot, and pumpkin and pecan. The products are available to purchase online and in Whole Foods stores throughout the Midwest.

As a working mom, Emily Groden needed a quick and easy breakfast for her toddler, but was not willing to sacrifice quality, nutrition, or taste for convenience. Launched in early March 2020, Evergreen frozen waffles are made with 100 percent whole wheat flour and flavored only by real fruits, vegetables, nuts and spices – without refined sugar, dairy, or preservatives.

While Emily originally created Evergreen for her own family, she is now on a mission to clean up the frozen waffle category. Carried in more than 45 Whole Foods Market locations across the Midwest and counting, Evergreen is rapidly growing a loyal base of health-conscious consumers who appreciate the clean ingredients, nutritional benefits, and delicious flavors.

From day one, Emily has focused on embedding philanthropy and social responsibility into her brand’s DNA. Evergreen currently makes monthly contributions to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and ongoing food donations to the Common Pantry in Lakeview, a nonprofit dedicated to combating hunger and food insecurity in Chicago neighborhoods.

Prior to founding Evergreen, Emily served as General Counsel for The Alinea Group, owner of the only 3-Michelin Star restaurant in Chicago, and Tock, an industry-shifting reservation platform. Before her pivot into the hospitality industry, Emily practiced law at Kirkland & Ellis as a corporate associate focused on mergers and acquisitions and worked for Analysis Group, an economic consulting firm in Boston.
A lifelong athlete with a passion for food, Emily was a Division I swimmer in college, is an Ironman finisher and Boston Marathon qualifier, and a recipient of the Level I and Level II Awards in Wines through the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.

Emily graduated cum laude from Yale College and Harvard Law School. She currently lives in Chicago with her husband and daughter Riley, Evergreen’s number one fan.

078: Marissa Goldstein — Repairing the World Through Work, Travel + Parenting 1200 803 Chase Jennings

There are many heroes that have made a substantial impact during the global pandemic. Veterans of sustainable product manufacturing, Co-Founders Marissa and Adam Goldstein, who founded Rafi Nova named after their two sets of twins and travel partners: Raya, Efi, Noa, and Eyva, quickly pivoted their business to give back.

Known for their handcrafted bags, they began making 100% cotton face masks and donated 150,000 masks to frontline workers.

Rafi Nova is a social enterprise on a mission to create products that meet the ever-changing needs of families while connecting global communities. Founded as a fair-trade fashion brand to equip adventurous families with sustainably made travel bags, the company shifted focus to face masks to solve the urgent needs of families and communities.

Marissa Goldstein is a proud mother to two sets of twins and CEO leading sustainable fair-trade travel accessory brand, Rafi Nova. As an avid traveler, Marissa founded Rafi Nova to encourage families to travel while creating meaningful connections with global communities. While the pandemic shifted her company’s production to face masks it expanded the company’s ability to connect and protect communities and support social causes committed to inclusivity. Under Marissa’s leadership, Rafi Nova will have donated more than 150,000 masks to organizations in need and workers on the front line by the year’s end.

Prior to launching Rafi Nova, Marissa and her husband, Adam, worked in the sustainable product manufacturing industry. After earning an MBA at Babson University, Marissa and her family of four (at the time) split their time in Vietnam and Boston, MA. While in Vietnam in 2017, Marissa noticed a group of Hmong women were selling handmade clothes made from brightly colored textiles. Goldstein felt compelled to tell those people’s stories and incorporate it into her business.
