Kara chatted with the “That’s Total Mom Sense” Podcast Host, Kanika Chadda-Gupta about parenting tips. Click here for more information about Kanika.

KANIKA’S PARENTING TIPS:

  1. BE PRESENT WITH YOUR KIDS.
  2. MAKE TIME FOR “MAGICAL MOMENTS.”
  3. AFFIRM, DON’T COMPLAIN.
  4. TRUST YOUR MOM SENSE AND DAD SENSE.

1.When you’re with your kids, BE PRESENT.

a.When we’re on our phones are snubbing our kids, it’s called “phubbing.” According to a study by the Journal of Adolescence, “researchers found that “parental phubbing was associated with students’ depression in late childhood and adolescence.”

b.Not to mention, when your kids grow up to be teens, you don’t them phubbing you. So set a precedent and be a good example.

1.Create magical moments through 1:1 time with each child.

a.Years ago, one of my dear friends was giving a eulogy for her mom who passed away and she was nostalgic about when she was a young kid, her mom would take only her to the lake to feed the ducks. This was what they did for their 1:1 bonding time. So I took a cue from that and have “Magical Mama” time with each child, split up my twins, and we do whatever they want. It could be a nice back rub, making necklaces, legos. It’s making memories and clearly they have a lasting impression through adulthood.

1.Affirm, don’t complain.

a.We are juggling a ton but everyone is battling something so when we complain, “ugh, I have to load the dishwasher again, fold more laundry, do a COSTCO run,” it’s not helping. It’s not a problem-solving mechanism at all. And our kids mirror us so their defense will be whining.

b.I spoke about this with Bobbi Brown who said we can’t control our circumstances, it’s how we respond not react to them and we have to “Get over it, get over ourselves, and get out there.” Instead, start your day with a list of affirmations. I say these affirmations every morning by Charles Haanel who wrote the Master Key system:

i.“I am whole, perfect, strong, powerful, loving, harmonious and happy”,

1.Trust your mom sense and dad sense.

a.To me, our mom sense is our built in sixth sense and superpower of intuition. It’s a fun play on words when I came up with the brand and podcast.

b.No pediatrician, or nanny or teacher or friend or book is going to truly understand your child so you trust your gut with what you think they need. It’ll never steer you wrong. You have all the answers.

ADVICE FROM EXPERTS ON THE PODCAST:

  • Bobbi Brown advises to “Get over it, get over yourself, and get out there.”
  • Natalie Morales lives by “Inhale the present. Exhale the past.”
  • Rebecca Minkoff chooses to “be fearless and unapologetic” about what matters most in her life. If she has to breastfeed in a boardroom or backstage, she will do it because that’s a priority to her family.
