SHAYNA FERM & TRACEY TEE: Band of Mothers

SHAYNA FERM & TRACEY TEE: Band of Mothers 1920 1080 Chase Jennings

Shayna Ferm started her acting career at The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago and then spent 11 years in NYC doing film and theatre, and producing and performing music, stand-up and sketch comedy. After having a baby in the Big Apple and immediately becoming pregnant with her second child (whoops!), she and her family moved to her hometown of Denver, Colorado. Weeks after baby number two was born, and always in search of a creative project, she and her lifelong friend Tracey Tee launched The Pump and Dump Show, a much-needed “mom’s night out” event that quickly grew to a nationally touring production, written, produced and starring Shayna and Tracey. The pair toured for 5 years before replicating the show to star additional casts of new moms and co-founding their umbrella brand, Band of Mothers Media. Her current role in the company, outside of co-hosting the Band of Mothers Podcast, is as Chief Creative Officer for all the branches of the business as well as for the current touring productions.

Tracey Tee double majored in Theatre and English at Hillsdale College, and quickly moved to Los Angeles where she worked as an actor, trained in improv comedy with The Groundlings and used her comedic flair as a freelance writer and purveyor of art and handmade goods in LA’s burgeoning art scene. After 7 years in LA, Tracey and her husband moved back to her native home of Denver, CO to start a family. Not long after her daughter was born, she dove back into live comedy with her lifelong friend Shayna Ferm as they developed a “parentally incorrect” night out for moms, The Pump and Dump Show. What started in a bar as a creative outlet (and much needed night out) for both quickly grew to a nationally touring production, written, produced and starring Tracey and Shayna. The pair toured for 5 years before replicating the show to star additional casts of new moms and co-founding their umbrella brand, Band of Mothers Media, where Tracey is CEO. She lives with her husband of 19 years, their 10-year-old daughter and recently made the happy mistake of adopting a third dog. Thanks, COVID!

10 Happiness - Thumbnail

AT HOME WITH HOMER: Happiness — with Stephanie Dua 1920 1080 Chase Jennings

Kanika: I heard you mention in a recent interview that it wasn’t your job to “make your kids happy” and it stopped me in my tracks. I mean, making sure someone else is happy is a tall order (and might I mention impossible), but so many parents assume that role. I know I did. If happiness isn’t the goal, what is?

Stephanie: Yes, I can totally relate. It’s so natural to assume that responsibility. But once you acknowledge that it’s an impossible task and start focusing on the things you do have control over, a huge weight lifts.

Stephanie’s Tips:

  • Give them power over their decisions, even the wrong ones.
    • If kids are fighting you to put on shoes or a raincoat, once I said, “Okay, don’t wear shoes” or “Okay, don’t wear a raincoat” and when they felt the direct consequences of their decision, they were able to make better decisions in the future
  • Give them agency over their success and failures
    • Ex. not checking homework — allowing the teacher to build a direct relationship with the student and hold them accountable
  • Support them as they experience a full range of emotions
    • You can’t control their feelings — sadness, elation and disappointment are all part of life, so instead help them develop tools to be able to cope with these emotions
  • Build resilience

9 Getting Involved - Thumbnail

AT HOME WITH HOMER: Getting Involved— with Stephanie Dua

AT HOME WITH HOMER: Getting Involved— with Stephanie Dua 1920 1080 Chase Jennings

Kanika: In case our listeners don’t know, your children are very involved in their community. How do you inspire your kids to get involved?

Stephanie: I used to think that teaching my children generosity meant I had to put together these big, elaborate gestures to be meaningful. But the BEST form of generosity we can teach our children comes in the form of small, simple acts of kindness. The best part is these small acts can fulfill many purposes, making them a double win — a win for you and your child!

Stephanie’s Tips:

  • Put together a care package for a neighbor
  • Collect non-perishable items for a food pantry
  • Set up a spare change jar in your home for a local charity
  • Pick up trash around your neighborhood
  • Find your local community garden and volunteer

090: Nichole Healy — Photo Books Made Easy for the Paparazzi Parent

090: Nichole Healy — Photo Books Made Easy for the Paparazzi Parent 1920 1080 Chase Jennings

When it comes to photos of your kids. What are you having most trouble with?

Organization – You have so many digital photos from newborn phase on up and you don’t know how to compartmentalize it all?

Time – You would love to be the scrapbooking mom but just don’t have the time or energy to do it. Life in a pandemic is all consuming!

Lack of Creativity – You tried apps online but you don’t have the creativity to create a photo book from scratch on your own.

We are going to answer all your questions around preserving photos and precious memories today!

Nichole Healy’s background starts with dance, which she pursued even at the college level. She studied dance at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She always had a desire to build a business, as she hails from an entrepreneurial family and also wanted to create a business that was BOTH meaningful and provided the kind of freedom that allowed her to adventure with her own family!

To that end, Nichole began her entrepreneurial endeavor when she was feeling tremendous mom-guilt over not having photo books done for her family. She thought there had to be an easier way to stay on top of getting her memories archived into photo books. She quickly discovered other parents were also frustrated that their memories were lost to the cloud too.

Her business meets this frustration head on. Memory My Way was founded in 2017 when Nichole started taking on clients one-on-one. Along the way she became a Certified Photo Organizer and today, she has gathered everything she knows about organizing, curating, and getting a plan in place for success into a membership experience. Inside, each member can take control of their photo clutter (if they feel unorganized) and/or put a system in place to get photo books done every year by learning from her self-paced courses and workshops. Each member is paired with a professional designer who custom creates photo books for them – saving tons of precious time and ensuring their books get done. Her mission is to help families rescue their memories from the cloud and remember their best adventures gathered around photo books, instead of another screen!

Nichole is also working on moving the membership to a web and mobile app that will only make all of this easier and more streamlined going forward. She describes her app as “the cloud with a heart” because it will be more concerned with getting memories into our hands instead of just keeping them locked away in the cloud.

Nichole is married to her husband of almost 11 years, who is a pilot, and they have two boys ages 7 and 9. They live near Atlanta, GA in the Northeast Georgia Mountains.

073: Sarah Harden — What Women Want: Championing Female-Driven Narratives in Media

073: Sarah Harden — What Women Want: Championing Female-Driven Narratives in Media 1920 1080 Chase Jennings

If you’ve found yourself binging on the latest shows to break free from the stress and monotony of life in a pandemic, chances are you’ve come across The Morning Show, Little Fires Everywhere, and Big Little Lies. All productions of Hello Sunshine released on Apple TV, Hulu, and HBO respectively.

Having bagged 18 Emmy nominations, Hello Sunshine is a welcome disruptor and new media company that puts women at the center of every story that it creates, celebrates, and discovers. Stories we love, big and small, funny and complex, across television, film, books and podcasts, shining a light on where women are now and helping them chart a new path forward.

It’s the brainchild of America’s sweetheart Reese Witherspoon, who…fun fact…began her acting career after first enrolling at Stanford. We’ve had the pleasure of watching her grow up on screen through her roles in Pleasantville, Cruel Intentions, the Legally Blonde series (which is soon to be a trilogy!) and her Academy Award winning performance in Walk the Line, to name a few. To top it off, she became a mom at the ripe age of 23 and made it her priority to be devoted to her three children, Ava, Deacon, and Tennessee.

As accomplished as she is, she knew she didn’t want her career to be just about her. She decided to leave a legacy that’s far more impactful and inclusive. Hello Sunshine.

So who’s heading the company behind the scenes and is Reese’s own trusted right hand woman? It’s Sarah Harden. Sarah has been at the helm as CEO leading Hello Sunshine through its rapid growth as a premium content studio and direct-to-consumer media brand. Prior to this, Sarah was President of Otter Media, a privately held joint venture between AT&T and the Chernin Group, where she spearheaded Otter’s first investment – Hello Sunshine. As President, she acquired, invested and launched global OTT video services with a variety of media companies including Fullscreen, Roosterteeth, Crunchyroll, Ellation, and Sky. During her leadership, Otter generated $400 million in revenue and acquired and retained more that 1.5 million paying subscribers across its video subscription businesses. Earlier on, Sarah was Group Director at New Corp Asia and SVP of Business Development at Fox Networks. She began her career at Boston Consulting Group in Melbourne, Australia and went on to attend Harvard Business School with high distinction as a Baker Scholar.

Sarah’s most important role, however, is being a mother. Sarah and her husband Dave have 3 kids — Lulu, 16, Tommy, 14, and Fletcher, 10. And, another fun fact…she’s a twin! These days, she’s helping crack algebraic equations and reading her kids’ persuasive letters to bring home a pet hamster, while negotiating multi-million dollar deals with top global networks via Zoom. All in a day’s work.
